About Kensington, MD
Kensington is a small town in Montgomery County, Maryland. At the 2020 U.S. census, it had 2,122 residents. The broader Greater Kensington area—covering the entire 20895 ZIP code—recorded a population of 19,753 in 2020.
History
The land around Rock Creek where Kensington sits was mostly farmland until 1873, when the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad finished the Metropolitan Branch through Montgomery County. A settlement formed at the crossing of the new rail line and the old Rockville-to-Bladensburg road, and this early community became known as “Knowles Station.”
In the early 1890s, Washington developer Brainard Warner began buying nearby parcels to create a planned Victorian neighborhood, complete with amenities like a church, library, and local newspaper. Inspired by a trip to London, he called the project “Kensington Park,” the tenth—and largest—subdivision in the area. When the town incorporated in 1894, Warner persuaded local leaders to officially name it Kensington.
What started as a farming village and rail stop gradually turned into a summer getaway for Washington, D.C., residents escaping the city heat. Over time, more people stayed year-round, and Kensington grew into a commuter suburb. Residents traveled to downtown Washington by B&O passenger trains and, starting in 1895, by a streetcar line originally known as the Chevy Chase Lake & Kensington Railway (later the Kensington Railway Company).
Much of the southern portion laid out by Warner still looks much as it did originally and is now protected as a historic district. The town’s layout has seen only a few major updates, including the replacement of the railroad crossing with a bridge in 1937 and the expansion of Connecticut Avenue—Kensington’s main road—in 1957. The former streetcar right-of-way, converted to bus service in 1935, was later paved and became Kensington Parkway.
